Recipes from a local larder

#eatsouth is our celebration of the amazing food and drink larder that we have on our doorstep. It’s been born through COVID as an opportunity to support our communities and our local producers. The challenge is thrown down every few weeks – cook with this local ingredient and share the results. First up is garlic from the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm.

Garlic? If you think of a French man with a bike and a beret at a jaunty angle, then think again. Cross the water but not so far and you can find some of the best garlic in the world right on our patch.

The Isle of Wight Garlic Farm has been growing these little bulbs of loveliness apparently since Granny Norah planted a few cloves in her Island garden more than six decades ago.

Today, the farm is a proper family business born from love, with garlic connections across the globe and family travels to the mountains of Georgia, Kazakhstan and Eastern Turkey in search for the “mother of all garlic”.

The farm sells a range of garlic for eating and growing. Every year, although maybe not this rather unusual one, a Garlic Festival is hosted at the farm and garlicky aficionados from across the UK make the crossing in search of their own holy ail (sorry).

We feel we owe it to our local producers to support them in these exceptional times and, as lovers of garlic, we decided we would try our hand at some garlic recipes. So we hit the internet and ordered some Wonky Wight and some Smoked.

Garlic from the Garlic Farm

We offered our enthusiastic, if not exactly Michelin-gifted, team of #eatsouth cooks, the option of Smoked or Wonky Wight garlic from the farm. We shopped then we shipped out. Make any dish using your choice, send us a photo and the recipe. That was the extent of the brief.

These are the results. Not bad even if we may be a little biased. You can download the recipes if you’d like to try them – we’d love to see your version – or a dish of your own?

Our little garlic image is thanks to Grandma Liz who refused to be involved as she couldn’t take photos with her phone, but was happy to do a pencil illustration for us!
